SUSPECTS AND SOCKS

Mick made them both a cup of strong black coffee and sat back down at the table. “We both want the same thing,” he said. “I guess all this murder has made me a little… suspicious. The village used to be so nice and now I am wondering if it’s time to move away.”

“Where would you go?”

“Maybe into Lincoln. I love that city with all my heart. I thought I loved the village but the way things are going I don’t know.”

“I think it is an amazing village and you have a beautiful home. Yes, things have been difficult but most of the people I’ve met here are so caring and kind-hearted. Don’t let a few bad apples drive you away.”

“Maybe you’re right. Now, let’s get back to the suspects. The next one I’m going to give you I have a lot of respect for.” He paused a moment as if to let those words sink in. “It is Stephen Cooper.”

Lola drew in a breath but managed to keep her face straight. Stephen was the council member who was up for reelection soon. He was a good friend of Tilly’s and seemed like a decent and caring man if not the best husband. “What motive does Mr. Cooper have for killing Lucinda?”

Mick cleared his throat a few times and squared his shoulders. It was as if he didn’t want to say the words. As if they sullied him. Lola wanted to shout at him to spit it out but she managed to stop herself and let the silence do the job for her.

“Lucinda spread some rather nasty rumors about Stephen’s wife and a member of the village. No one believed them. The man in question is nowhere near as good as Stephen. But Lucinda would keep spreading and I know it annoyed Stephen a lot. If the lies got around, they could damage his election campaign. People have murdered for less.”

“Yes, they have.”

“I guess the man in question would be a suspect too. Now, he is a different kettle of fish. He’s already been accused of one murder, perhaps he committed this one too.”

Lola had decided she wasn’t going to say anything about the fact that the rumors about Stephen were actually true. His wife, Maureen, had been seeing Tony Munch for some time. The split of the marriage was amicable and they had also decided that they wouldn’t announce it until after the election.

Lola took a sip of coffee and just as she was about to speak, Sassy came into the room with a pair of black and white striped socks in her mouth. Seeing her, Lola almost spat the coffee across the table and began to choke.

“Are you okay?” Mick asked.

Using the distraction, Sassy nipped under the table and came around to Lola’s feet where she stuck the socks in between them.

“You sneak them out for me,” Sassy said.

Lola coughed again. “Yes, I’m sorry, it just went down the wrong way.” As Mick was blaming Tony, Lola decided she may as well tell the truth.
